Corrosion and Protection Center

Corrosion and Protection Center, USTB was approved by UNDP in 1987 two years after the application from Chinese government. UNDP invested 1 million US dollars and the Chinese government put in 3.5 million RMB. The center owned 3500 m2 lab space. Selected faculties were invited to major university and research institute abroad. Foreign experts were invited to come to China for seminars and training workshops.  The center is also the headquarter for the Chinese Corrosion and Protection Society, hydrogen and stress corrosion cracking committee and anti-corrosion engineering committee. In recent years,  the space and facilities in the center have been greatly increased and improved. The overall space has been increased to 6000 m2. A building named “corrosion building” is located on campus at USTB. Based on the center, “National center for materials service safety ”was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The director of the center is Prof. Qiao Lijie and the vice director Prof. Meng Huimin. The CPC Secretary is Dr. Wang Deren. The center consists with the following laboratories and engineering centers.

  2. Key laboratory for environmental fracture MoE

  3. Key laboratory for corrosion and protection MoE

  4.Beijing key laboratory of corrosion, wear-corrosion and surface technology

  5.Beijing Engineering research center for surface nano technology


Three main laboratories are involved in the center, which are laboratory of failure analysis, laboratory for corrosion control and laboratory for surface science and engineering.

There are 35 faculties in the center, among which 17 are professors (15 PhD supervisors), 15 associate professors and 4 assistant professors. Faculties include academician, “Changjiang Scholoars”, PI for outstanding scholars from NSFC and others. The corrosion and protection center is now the most influential corrosion centers in the world.

 The center covers all most every fields in corrosion, such as environmental fracture, high temperature corrosion, surface engineering, corrosion control, electrochemical engineering etc.. The center now is in charge of the national natural corrosion stations, the national key platform development, “863””973”and various NSFC projects and industrial collaboration. The annual research income is about 40 million RMB, among which 80% is from the government. Over 100 scientific papers are published every year.

The center has been awarded one second-prize national natural science award, one second-prize of national science and technology development. The center also received many prizes from provinces and ministries. Over 20 patents have been granted. In the past 5 years, 8 books, 3 lecture textbooks have been published.

There are 47 major facilities in the center, such as the salt spray chambers, erosion-corrosion equipment, SEM, AFM, nano indentor, etc.. The overall value is about 52 million RMB.
