“Widely absorbing first-class young talents and strengthening first-class materials disciplines” ——The 2019 summer academic camp of the Materials Department, University of Science and Technology Beijing was successfully held from July 1st to 4th. This summer camp event was hosted by Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology, and total of 153 outstanding college students from Central South University, Northeastern University, Sichuan University and other universities across the country participated.

                                             

On the morning of July 2nd, the opening ceremony of the summer camp was held in the academic lecture hall. The ceremony was chaired by professor Jianlin Sun, deputy director of the Materials Department, and leaders of the second-level units of the Materials Department attended the ceremony. Professor Junpin Lin, director of State Key Laboratory of New Metal Materials, gave a welcome speech and introduced the development history and academic culture of the materials discipline at University of Science and Technology Beijing. Deputy dean Zhihao Yao of the Graduate School affirmed the summer camp of the Materials Department, and put forward the prospect and imagination of this summer camp.

After the opening ceremony, Professor Xiaogang Li of Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology and Professor Shouguo Wang of School of Materials Science and Engineering gave special reports to the campers. Professor Xiaogang Li proceeded from the actual production of China ’s steel industry, with “Chinese steel sneezes, Europe and the United States will catch a cold”, which strengthens the professional confidence of campers, and introduces the importance of corrosion research and control to campers from the national economy and people's livelihood of all aspects; Citing the trade war between China and the United States, professor Shouguo Wang explained the scientific charm of magnetic storage materials, which made the campers deeply appreciate the strong academic atmosphere of University of Science and Technology Beijing.

On the afternoon of the 2nd, Professor Wenjun Dong, deputy dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Yuan Wu, deputy director of State Key Laboratory of New Metal Materials, and professor Jianlin Sun, deputy director of the Materials Department, respectively introduced the research progress, faculty strength and training characteristics of the three secondary disciplines of material physics and chemistry, material science and material processing engineering. The three professors had an in-depth exchange with the campers based on their professional characteristics.

　　This summer camp also arranged a variety of activities such as teacher-student exchange meetings, laboratory visits, postgraduate "academic three minutes", and school history museum visits, allowing campers to experience the scientific research life of University of Science and Technology Beijing.

On the morning of 4th, the closing ceremony was held in the Lecture Hall of Times Lingyu. Professor Chunjing Wu, the secretary of School of Materials Science and Engineering, made a summary speech. From the perspective of the teacher, secretary Wu raised hopes for the campers and welcomed them to apply for the Materials Department of University of Science and Technology Beijing.

Qian Li, secretary of the Party Committee of Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology, and Xiuqin Xia, secretary of State Key Laboratory of New Metal Materials, awarded the honorary certificates to outstanding students. Camper representative Zhirui Zhang shared the harvest and insights during the summer camp.

Starting from the characteristics of our school's material disciplines, this summer camp allows campers to concentrate on experiencing the advantages of our school's material disciplines. At the same time, they have made close friends in the academic circle, established a learning network, effectively enhanced professional self-confidence, broadened the vision of campers, and successfully completed the expected goal.
